3 Lies to Stop Telling Yourself | Northern VA Boudoir Photographer

1. I need to lose weight first.

This is first on the list only because I struggle with it myself. Honest truth time - each of my boudoir sessions has come when I've been at my highest weight ever. That's not an easy thing to admit. But you know what happened? I LOVED my images. No matter how much weight I gain or lose, I will always love those images. Because they are me. And they allowed me to see myself and my body the way others do, through a different set of eyes. Because I'm not just my lumps and jiggly parts, I'm also my curves and beauty. And you know what else? Through proper posing and wardrobe, those few extra pounds aren't even noticeable in images.

2. I can't afford it.

No doubt, boudoir is an investment. But you know what? So are you. The things that are most important are those that we anticipate and prepare for. They're the things that we hold on to when they're over and think about to lift us up. And that's exactly what boudoir is. It's an investment in yourself. A way to show off every side of who you are and what you want to be. And you're worth working with someone who knows what they're doing and will give you the experience of a lifetime.

3. It's selfish and vain to have photos like this of myself.

Stop right there. It's not. It's just not. It's empowering and confidence inspiring. We capture those that we love and value. Our families, our children. Now add yourself to that list. Because you love and value who you are.

The Boudoir Experience: Easier Than You Think | Northern VA Boudoir Photographer

I imagine if you're reading this right now, you're interested in a boudoir session. Maybe you've been thinking about it forever. How amazing it would be to have photos of yourself that look like the other women you see on my site.

But something is holding you back. You're nervous. Or unsure. It could be for any number of reasons, or no reason at all.

Maybe you've already read through the experiences other women have had, but in case you need just a bit extra I'll explain the process from beginning to end.

So what is a session like? What *actually* goes on??

Before we ever meet in person, you'll have received a complete guide full of information with everything you need to know. Seriously, that baby is packed with more details and information than you could imagine - just so you know exactly what to expect and how things work. We'll also chat for a bit on the phone. We'll talk about why you're interested in a session, what you'd like to do, and I'll answer any lingering questions you might have.

Once session-day arrives you'll start by getting pampered by my hair and makeup team. Professional hair and makeup is included with every session because you deserve to feel nothing less than amazing for your boudoir shoot. I'll go through any wardrobe pieces you've brought with you and show you pieces from the studio wardrobe to help you select the looks you'd like for your session. I'll help you choose outfits that photograph well and make you feel your absolute best. The kind of feeling that'll make you go "hell yeah, I own this shit!"

After hair and makeup, it's time to shoot! When we begin shooting I'll give you a quick explanation of what to expect and general posing tips. From there, I will walk you through every single pose. Where to stand. Where to put your hands. Where to look. I'll even do the poses with you. All you need to do is follow along and trust that I know how to make you look and feel gorgeous.

We'll chat. We'll laugh. And the time will fly by faster than you know it.  And when it's time to leave, you'll strut out of there ready to take on the world.

Why Boudoir | Northern VA Intimate Women's Photographer

It's occurred to me that I haven't done a very good job of sharing what boudoir means to me. Because it's easy to think it's about feeling beautiful and having sexy photos of yourself. And that's true - I want everyone woman to feel beautiful. To have something to point at and think "that's ME and I'm HOT."

And while that's true, it's also more than that.

It's about doing something for yourself. For no other reason than you want to. It's about reveling in yourself. Celebrating who you are and the power that you have. You have the freedom of choice, and self-determination, and the ability to do anything you set your mind to.

From the moment we are born, society sends women a very clear but confusing message: be pretty, but not too pretty. Everyone is allowed to look at you, but you aren't allowed to like it. You have to be pretty in a certain way. Dresses are good, mini-skirts are slutty. There are rules that don't don't make any sense at all; they conflict and clash and make us doubt ourselves.

But forget all of that. You can wear WHATEVER YOU WANT. You can look however you want. You get to decide what makes you feel good. Because it's your body, your choice, your decision.

And boudoir is just another way to do that. It's about embracing everything that we are and ENJOYING it. Being able to look back and say "I DID that. I was bold and amazing and loved it."

Because when women walk out of my studio, they can do anything.

11 Wardrobe Ideas that Aren't Lingerie | Washington DC Boudoir Photographer

By far the most common question I get from clients are about what to wear for a boudoir session (the second most common is about privacy). And I often hear, can I do a session if I don't want to wear lingerie? And the answer is, of course you can!

First, let's get the idea that you have to wear lingerie at your boudoir session out of the way. Do I love a good bra & undies set? Absolutely. Do I expect you to wear that at your session? Nope, not at all. Many women feel like they have to wear lingerie for boudoir, and that couldn't be further from the truth. Many women don't wear a single piece of lingerie at all.

Not everyone is into lingerie, and I get it. You don't go around wearing it everyday, so it just doesn't feel like you. While boudoir is often about stepping outside of your comfort zone, you should still feel like yourself. Some of my favorite images from sessions don't include a single piece of lingerie. Here are some of my very favorite looks that don't include a single garter belt:

1. Classic T-shirt & undies.

You can't go wrong with this classic. Flattering on just about every body type, it's casual and sexy.

2. A bodysuit.

This one strays into the lingerie category, but I give it a special exception for good reason - bodysuits are amazing. They are flattering for everyone, comfortable, and no more revealing than a bathing suit. If you don't feel comfortable in traditional lingerie, this is a great lingerie-esque option that many women feel great in.

3. A dress.

Yep, a dress. Crazy to think you can wear something that's meant to cover you from head to toe, but you can make this work too. I recommend dresses that have lots of movement so we can play with it as we go. Best worn without anything underneath!

4. A tank top or cami.

This is another great casual option. If you love that "I just woke up like this" look, a cami can show off all of your curves.

5. Oversized sweater or cardigan.

Sweaters are a great option because you probably already have the perfect one in your closet. Take your favorite everyday sweater and wear it for a session you won't be able to forget.

6. Nothing at all.

You're here, so you might as well get nekkid while you're at it.

7. Body chains and jewelry.

I typically recommend keeping limiting the accessories and jewelry you wear, but body chains are my one exception. They are a great way to add interest and just a hint of sparkle.

8. Lace tops.

I love lace! It's so gorgeous and beautiful for everyone. Lace tops in particular are a favorite. They give you a little extra coverage while also giving a glimpse into what's underneath.

9. Crop tops.

If you're game to bare your midriff this is a fun choice.

10. A bed sheet.

Simple and a classic for boudoir.

11. Fishnet stockings.

Fun and endlessly sexy. I recommend fishnets instead of your typical stocking for several reasons, not the least of which is that fishnets just super hot.

So that's it ladies! A list of ideas for your next boudoir session that doesn't include anything from Victoria's Secret. You don't need to spend hours shopping and worrying about what to buy before your session - you probably already have what you need in your own closet.

And if you're still unsure, I've still got you covered. Every client has access to the studio wardrobe for boudoir sessions, and I send a complete What to Wear guide and preparation advice when you reserve your session.

At the end of the day, no matter what you wear, your images and experience should be a reflection of you and your style.

4 Things You Should Know About Your Boudoir Session | Washington DC Intimate Women's Photographer

1. It's an all-women zone. For your privacy and comfort, the boudoir studio is for women only. That means everyone you meet at the studio that day - from the hair stylist and makeup artist, to me - will be a woman. While I'm sure your husband would love to tag along for your session, he's not allowed. Sessions are about female empowerment and confidence. You got this girl.

2. You'll be sore the next day. There are two things I hear after every session: that was so much fun! and I'm going to be so sore tomorrow! And if you did everything right in your session, you will be. I don't necessarily believe in the "beauty is pain" adage, but when it comes to boudoir posing, I'll have you moving in ways you aren't used to. It might feel weird, but it looks amazing.

3. It's all about your comfort level. Want to stay more covered up in an over-sized sweater? Sure! Want to bare it all? That's great too. Your boudoir session is all about how you feel and what you want to show off. Whether you want to wear a t-shirt or nothing at all, it's all possible.

4. It will change how you see yourself. Not only because of the images you'll receive, but also because you did it. You took this step, this step to do something for you - about you - and it was amazing. Knowing that you can step out of your comfort zone, and that it was an incredible experience, will change the way you see yourself and how you approach future possibilities. Whatever it is, go for it
