I'm Kate. I'm the owner of Kate Juliet Photography, located in Fairfax, VA.
Through a passion for photography and a desire to help women discover their inner and outer beauty, I decided to specialize in women's portraiture and boudoir photography. I know how to use light to compliment a woman, and how to pose you for the most flattering look. I will help you truly believe in your inner beauty, so ignore those hesitations about losing a few extra pounds; stop telling yourself that you'll do it later. You are beautiful now.
I provide professional hair and makeup services with every boudoir session. Not to make you look better, but to help you see that you are gorgeous and to make you feel like a supermodel. When you feel fabulous, that confidence exudes from your images, and that makes all the difference between what you see in the mirror and the portraits I will show you.
It's not about how you look, but rather about how you feel about the way you look. Confidence is truly a beautiful thing. Confidence is what we all need. Confidence, self-acceptance and personality is what I bring out in the women I photograph.
Some of us forget what it's like to feel beautiful and strong. We get busy with our lives, our family, our jobs. Or maybe we never knew at all.
This experience is for you to feel that again, because you are truly perfect and gorgeous right now. I can't wait to show it to you.
Intimate boudoir photography can feel daunting. It's hard to be in front of the camera, especially when you are wearing next to nothing! I completely understand how you're feeling, but trust that I know how to make you look and feel amazing. I use flattering lighting and posing techniques that will help you look your very best, so there is nothing to worry about. You're in good hands with me and I can't wait for your session.
Your portrait experience will begin with a phone consultation to give us an opportunity to get to know one another and discuss what you're looking for. All boudoir sessions include complimentary professional hair and make up services. I work with a wonderful team of stylists who know how to emphasize your best features and highlight your natural beauty, so you look and feel your most confident.
Two to three weeks after your session we will meet either via online live chat (Skype) or in person to view your images and you will also have the opportunity to place your order. Due to the nature of boudoir imagery, online galleries are not available for boudoir sessions.
One viewing and ordering appointment is included with every session, subsequent viewing and ordering sessions are subject to an additional fee to cover my time and studio costs.
Final orders are delivered 3-8 weeks after placing and finalizing orders. Custom designed products may take longer pending design approval and lab turnaround time.
planning your outfits
Simplicity is key. I find that simple clothing and neutral colors feature women best. The studio wardrobe is available to all clients, and features beautiful pieces for women in neutral colors and flattering styles. If you choose to utilize the studio wardrobe, you must bring your own black and/or nude thong to wear under lingerie pieces.
The studio wardrobe is meant to supplement your own personal items, so I recommend bringing any clothing that you think might be "photo worthy" to your session. Some ideas of what to bring:
- matching panties & bras
- over-sized sweaters
- thin/see through t-shirts
- boy shorts
- tank tops
- stockings or fishnets
- cardigan sweaters
- crop tops
- any "photo-worthy" underwear & bras
I recommend clothing in simple neutral colors, including:
- white, ivory, & cream
- dark & light gray
- blush/light pink
Avoid shiny fabrics like satin and silk, anything reflective (sequins, rhinestones, studs), and bright colors (red, neon colors, etc.). They all play havoc with the camera and don't photograph well.
Be creative and think about what makes you feel confident and sexy. Have lots of ideas & outfits? Bring them all and we can narrow them down when you arrive for your session.
Pack your outfits the night before and remember that you can always email me for tips and ideas. If you're really at a loss, don't worry! A gorgeous session can be created with pieces as simple as underwear and a white sheet.
additional tips & tricks ...
~ don't forget the little things like fingers & toes. Make sure they are shaped nicely without any chipping nail polish.
~ cut out tags from clothing & underwear so they don't stick out
To stay true to my art and vision of women's intimate portraiture, I do not shoot sessions with props, including men's shirts, aprons, jerseys, and costumes. Not only do those items not support my personal style, but they are generally not flattering for most women, and hide the curves we are trying to show off.
The focus of your session should be you and the things that make you beautiful. I promise that those things don't include a baggy shirt or sports prop. Sometimes the more props we use, the more we try to hide behind them. I want to push you beyond a contrived prop, past the hiding - I want to feature you and everything that you are.
a word on nudity...
While I am happy to photograph implied nudity, topless or bottomless images, and artistic nudes, please note that I do not photograph genitalia or "full frontals." Accordingly, please do not wear crotch-less underwear or lingerie at your session.
I have photographed women for years and I know exactly how to pose you right down to your fingertips. You don't need to worry about a thing. During your session I will ask you to do simple things like bring that shoulder towards me, put your hand here, bring your chin down, arch your back, etc. Very simple movements that any woman can do, and again, you don't need to do a thing to prepare. If you have any physical limitations that will effect your ability to pose, please let me know in advance. While I can't promise that every pose will be comfortable, they will make you look your very best.
Your job is simple: show up for your photo shoot, and let me take care of the rest. You will love the results!
I have been studying and implementing advanced retouching techniques for years. That said, I am not a heavy-handed retoucher. My retouching philosophy is to remove things that are temporary and to make you look your best; not to alter your body type or smooth away 20 pounds. I firmly believe that every woman is beautiful, and my posing techniques are designed to make the most of your body shape, enhancing your positives.
Your session will be held at my residential studio in Fairfax, VA. It is conveniently located near Rt. 50, Rt. 29, and I-66. It has wonderful natural light and is the perfect backdrop for your images. It has all of the furniture and equipment I need to shoot your perfect session. I have no doubt you will love it too.
30-60 minute phone consult
60-90 minutes hair & makeup
1 hour session
2-3 weeks editing & post-processing time
60-90 minute viewing & ordering appointment
when will i receive my final order?
Most orders are delivered within 4 weeks, although custom and design intensive products may take 6-8 weeks..
I offer only the most high quality products available.
Due to the nature of custom made products, rush orders are not available.
Before you commit to a session with me we will have a phone consultation to give us a chance to talk about how you dream of being photographed to make sure I am a good fit for your needs.
If you decide that I am the photographer for you, we will schedule a date for your session and I will email you with tips for preparing for your session. It's all easy stuff like drink more water and arrive with a clean face for makeup application. All of this helps me tailor the session to your needs so you will receive beautiful portraits of yourself that you will love.
In general, I recommend the following to prepare for your session:
Before Your Session
- Prep the outfits you'd like to be photographed in. I recommend having 2-3 outfits planned for your session, with one being a little more covered up (for example an over-sized sweater, or tank top, + underwear) and one more revealing.
- Please do not tan (spray tan or otherwise) in preparation for your session. Tan lines and orange skin aren't good looks for anyone, and spray tan will rub off on fabric and bedding. I do not edit to correct tan lines/color.
The Week of Your Session
- Treat yourself to a mani-pedi. I recommend toned down/neutral nails; Get 'em buffed and glossy, but skip the nail art and bright colors.
- Shave & wax. If you plan on waxing, please make sure to do it several days in advance so that your skin isn't red or irritated
- Moisturize daily. Your skin will thank you for it and it'll look that much more "glowy" for your session.
- Drink lots of water. Again, your skin will give you a big thanks for it.
The Day of Your Session
- be sure to drink lots of water and eat before you come in (but avoid salty foods)
- arrive with a clean face (no makeup) and clean, dry hair
- wear loose clothing on your way to the session (so you don't get any clothing lines on your skin), and a button up shirt
- use clear/invisible deodorant
- don't forget your outfits!
the day of your shoot
When you arrive, you will sit down for hair and makeup to begin your pampering. My professional hair and makeup artists will chat with you about the look that you're wanting for your session to make sure you love every bit of your makeover. While you're in hair and makeup, I will be setting up for your session. I will also take some time to chat with you to plan your session and go through any wardrobe pieces you have brought with you.
Once it's time for the session I'll ask you which outfit you're most comfortable in and that will be the first look we start with. I want to make sure that you're comfortable 100% of the time during your session. You might be nervous at first, but I will guide you every step of the way. You don't need to worry about posing or facial expressions, remember I'll be walking you through everything as we go.
While I work with you, you may notice that I ask you to move in different ways and re-adjust your hands or where you look before I begin shooting. Rest assured that when I ask you to alter a pose it has nothing to do you doing anything "wrong." I am just looking to get an idea of how you move and what poses suit you best. Every woman is different and I want to find the poses that are the most flattering and feel like "you."
While I pose you, you can be as tame or as bold as you'd like, but I will never ask you to do something you aren't comfortable with. Many women find that they are bolder than they realize and that's great too!
Approximately 2-3 weeks after your session, I will contact you to schedule your viewing and ordering appointment. This is where you will see your beautiful images for the first time and make your ordering selections.
My clients joke that they don't know how they're going to choose because they love them all! I think that's a very good problem to have and I will help you choose your favorite images for your final products. Most of my clients choose to display their images in an album along with digital images for private use.
Before your viewing and ordering session, take a few minutes to review my available Collections and products so you feel comfortable when making an ordering decision. Please remember that one viewing and ordering appointment is included with your session, subsequent viewing and ordering sessions are subject to an additional fee to cover my time and studio costs.
Please make sure to have all decision-makers present at your viewing and ordering appointment. This means that if you normally make big purchase decisions as a team, both you and your partner should present at the appointment because this is your opportunity to to make decisions regarding your portrait order. If you and your partner are comfortable with only one of you making all of the choices it is perfectly fine to meet on your own, but keep in mind that if a second ordering appointment becomes necessary for any reason there is an additional fee to cover my time at the additional appointment. Friends and other guests are not permitted at viewing & ordering appointments.
I'm not a lingerie type girl - can I still do a shoot?
Absolutely! Lingerie is not the only way to look and feel sexy. You can do a session with a simple tank top and t-shirt or over-sized sweater if you're more casual.
I'm so nervous! Do I have to get naked?
Absolutely not! Implied nudity is a given for most sessions, but that absolutely does not mean that you have to bare it all with me. Show as much or as little skin as you are comfortable with. It's natural to feel self-conscious before a boudoir session so don't let cold feet hold you back. My job is to guide you every step of the way and the session is designed to allow plenty of time to make you feel relaxed and comfortable. By the end of my sessions all of my clients say how much fun it was and how they were much more comfortable than they thought they would be.
What if I have to reschedule my session?
Studio policy, which you agree to at the time of booking, allows for rescheduling your session one time with a $150 rescheduling fee. You must notify me at least 7 days before your session date if you need to reschedule, or your retainer will be forfeited. If you need to reschedule your session for any reason, I will work with you to reschedule your session based on my next availability. However, please understand that I regularly book up 5-7 months in advance, so if you need to change your session date it may be rescheduled for a new date several months out. If you are unable to attend on the new rescheduled date for your session for any reason, your retainer will be forfeited. Please understand that your session requires the time and talents of multiple people - not only myself, but also the hair and makeup artists that I work with - so I encourage you to select a date that will work for you.
What if I don't like my images?
After photographing women for years I'm confident that you will be thrilled with the finished product. However, if during your viewing and ordering appointment you are unsatisfied for any reason you are not required to purchase your portraits.
Do you include hair extensions?
I do not recommend wearing hair extensions during your session. It can be tempting to add length to your hair, but I promise you can rock your shorter hair too. We will be flipping and moving your hair around throughout your session, making the spots where the extensions are clipped or attached visible. I do not edit images to correct this.
Can I bring someone with me to the session or viewing & ordering appointment?
Due to the intimate nature of boudoir photography, I do not allow friends or partners in the studio during sessions. Likewise, friends and other guests are not permitted during viewing and ordering sessions. For liability and insurance reasons non-clients are not permitted at the studio. Additionally, while it may seem like a fun idea to have a friend with you, I've found that, at best, having another person there overwhelms the process. And at worst, an unsupportive friend can deflate the experience. Your boudoir experience is for you and you alone. It is a safe space where your opinion is the one that matters most and you can make the selections that will be most important to you.
studio notices & policies
My natural light studio is one of my very favorite places to be. The natural light in my studio is wonderful, providing gorgeous light almost every day of the year. On occasion though, mostly on very rainy days, it is necessary to reschedule sessions in the studio to get the best light for your session. In the event this happens I will reschedule your session for as soon as possible. Rescheduling studio sessions for this reason are made at the sole discretion of the photographer.
Should you need to reschedule your session for any reason please contact me as soon as possible. The reschedule policy is as follows:
~ There is a $150 fee to reschedule your session for any reason.
~ Sessions may be re-scheduled one time, after which your session retainer is forfeited.
~ Sessions must be re-scheduled at least 7 days in advance. Should you cancel or need to reschedule less than 7 days in advance, your session retainer will be forfeited and a new retainer will be
required to hold your session.
Additionally, please be aware that as my studio is a residence, there are dogs who live there. While the dogs are not generally allowed in the studio space and you will not see them during your session, those with allergies should be aware and take any necessary precautions as you see fit.
